Rio / Salvador
Day 1 – Depart the UK.
Day 2 – Arrival in Rio de Janeiro and transfer to hotel of your choice. Afternoon visit to the Corcovado Mountain with its iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer. Take the small train that winds its way up the mountain through the lush tropical vegetation and offers glimpses of the treat that lies ahead. From the 700 m / 2,300 ft platform, you will enjoy one of the world's most spectacular views over the seven million strong city below that is framed by the mountainous landscape, the sea and the bay.
Day 3 – Carnival, music, football…. These are quintessentially Brazilian passions. This afternoon’s tour will combine some of these with Sugar Loaf, the city’s other world famous mountain landmark, climbing 400 m / 1,300 ft in a cable car to enjoy superb, but very different views across the city and its beaches. You choose what you would like to do for the rest of the afternoon – either visit Maracanã Stadium, where football legends and giants have played and the World Cup was held in 1950, visit the dressing rooms and get close to the pitch. If football is not your thing, you can choose a tour of Old Rio, walking with specialised guide through historical centre of Rio. From October to about 2 weeks prior to the Carnival (in February or March) you can also choose to visit a ‘barracão’, the workshop where devoted artisans use simple materials to craft the opulent floats and costumes that dominate the city’s Carnival parades. (B)
Day 4 – Enjoy a Jeep tour to the Tijuca Forest. In a few minutes you will be amidst lush vegetation, away from the excitement of the city below, with time to enjoy a gentle walk and some magnificent views. Afternoon at leisure. This evening take an optional tour to sample some true Brazilian music. (B)
Day 5 – At leisure to take optional tours, such as a visit to the mountain resort town of Petrópolis or perhaps the Tropical Islands to the south – or just relax by the hotel pool or on the beach. (B)
Day 6 – Morning flight to Salvador da Bahia. Afternoon at leisure.
Day 7 – Salvador is a vibrant and colourful city that stages one of the world's biggest carnivals. Many of its religious festivals are rooted in the Afro-Brazilian Candomblé religion. The morning excursion is to the colonial centre to visit the lovingly restored Pelourinho district, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its narrow alleyways, ornate churches and colourfully painted facades. Afternoon at leisure. (B)
Day 8 – Full day tour to Cachoeira. Leaving the city behind, drive through some of the oldest farmland in Brazil. This is the land of sugar cane and tobacco plantations, peaceful colonial towns and busy country markets. Lunch in Cachoeira, a charming colonial town in a beautiful setting. Take a walking tour of the town with its many wood sculpture studios, bustling market (Wed, Fri and Sat) and visit the Sisterhood of the Boa Morte, a sorority which traces its origins back to the time of slavery in Brazil. (B, L) Day 9 – Relax in Salvador or take an extension to Praia do Forte or another nearby resort. (B)
Day 10 – Transfer to Salvador’s airport for the return flight to either Rio or Sao Paulo and connecting flight to the UK. (B)
