Lima / Cusco / Machu Picchu
Iquitos / Amazon Cruise
Day 1 – Depart London for morning flight to Lima, arriving in the evening. Transfer to your hotel for a two-night stay.
Day 2 – Morning at leisure. Afternoon city tour of classical and modern Lima, taking in the Plaza San Martin and Plaza de Armas, the Cathedral and Government Palace. (B)
Day 3 – Early morning flight to Cuzco. Transfer to the Sacred Valley of the Incas with tour including visits to Ollantaytambo and Pisac, famous for Inca terracing and a colourful market respectively. Overnight in the Urubamba Valley. (B, L)
Day 4 – Early transfer to Ollanta station for the train journey through to Machu Picchu, the so-called ‘Lost City of the Incas’. Guided tour of one of the world’s greatest archaeological sites. Overnight. (B, L)
Day 5 – Morning free to visit the ruins and an opportunity to climb Huayna Picchu above the site for spectacular panoramic views. Afternoon return rail journey to Cusco. (B)
Day 6 – Morning at leisure. Afternoon tour of the capital of the Inca empire, visiting the main sites and nearby ruins. (B)
Day 7 – Flight to Lima and onward connection to Iquitos. Now known as the gateway to the northern Peruvian Amazon, Iquitos is located on the River Ucayali and can only be reached by boat or air. It was a wealthy city during the rubber boom and many colonial buildings and tiled facades have survived. Upon arrival, transfer to port and the Delfin Amazon Riverboat.
The Delfin is an attractive boat of 7 cabins and offers an excellent way to explore the region in comfort. Cabins have air conditioning units, orthopaedic mattresses, high-quality pure cotton sheets and private bathrooms of fine wooden furnishings and hot showers. The style is casual but elegant.
The crew, service, dining room and food are of a high standard and several daily excursions aboard smaller boats are accompanied by naturalist guides. Set sail along the Amazon River. (B, D)
Day 8 – In the morning, explore the Yanayacu River, one of the so called ‘black water rivers’. Occasional fishermen in their dug out canoes and a great variety of birds such as terns, oriole blackbirds, Wattled Jacanas as well as monkeys, sloth and black collared hawks. In the afternoon, visit the narrow Yarapa River experience the abundant and spectacular deep rainforest wilderness including: squirrel monkeys, herons, egrets and the rare horned screamers. (B, L, D)
Day 9 – Arrive at the Marañon River one of the largest tributaries of the Amazon River, already within the boundaries of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Wide variety of wildlife such as parrots, macaws, toucans and all different kinds of monkeys Grey and pink dolphins can sometimes be seen swimming near the boat. Leaving late afternoon, the second excursion of the day brings the opportunity to experience the abundant and spectacular deep rainforest wilderness including monk ski, howler and capuchin monkeys. Once dark, the opportunity to experience the jungle at night; mammals and reptiles such as black caiman, poison frogs and other species. (B, L, D)
Day 10 – Explore the Nauta Caño Creekin search of parrots, macaws, squirrel monkeys, iguanas and many other species of animals from the deep Amazonian rainforest. Once back aboard, the Delfin cruises Marañon River downstream towards the town of Nauta. >From here, transfer by air conditioned coach to Iquitos airport and flight to Lima for overnight. (B, L)
Day 11 – Morning at leisure. Transfer to the airport in Lima for your flight to the UK. Arrives next day (B)
Day 12 – Arrival in London.
