Lima / Cusco / Machu Picchu

In Peru, the country’s best hotels – The Miraflores Park, in Lima, the Monasterio Hotel in Cusco and the fabled Sanctuary Lodge by Machu Picchu citadel – are owned and managed by Orient Express. The company also runs the country’s main rail routes, offering deluxe rail journeys between Cusco and Machu Picchu and Puno.
Day 1 – Depart UK for Lima, arriving in the evening. Transfer to Miraflores Park for a two-night stay.
Day 2 – Full day tour visiting the ‘City of Kings’. Featuring the historical centre, see Plaza Mayor, where the Government Palace, City Hall, Cathedral and the Archbishop’s Palace are located. Visit Casa Aliaga, America’s best preserved colonial mansion in continuous occupation by the same family since 1535. The tour includes San Francisco Monastery, a masterpiece of colonial architecture, before touring the residential districts of Lima. Lunch at La Rosa Nautica, a Victorian-style restaurant by the ocean offering fish and seafood specialities. In the afternoon, visit the Larco Herrera Museum, housed in an 18th century colonial mansion that holds the most comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian art in Peru. (B, L)
Day 3 – Morning flight to Cusco. Accommodation at the Monasterio Hotel for three nights. Afternoon at leisure to acclimatise to the high altitude. (B)
Day 4 – Morning tour of the capital of the Inca Empire visiting the Plaza del Armas, the cathedral and the Santo Domingo monastery before continuing to the Inca ruins at Tambomachay, Kenko, Puca Pucara and Sacsayhuaman. (B)
Day 5 – Full-day private tour of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, including visits to Ollantaytambo and Pisac, famous for Inca terracing and a colourful market respectively. Lunch at ‘Casa-Hacienda Orihuela’, a stunning colonial property, situated above a hill from where you can enjoy one of the finest views of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Overnight at the Monasterio Hotel in Cusco. (B, L)
Day 6 – Early transfer to the station for the train journey through to Machu Picchu, the so-called ‘Lost City of the Incas’. The guided tour of one of the world’s greatest archaeological sites includes the main square, the Royal Quarters, the burial grounds, the Temple of the Three Windows and the Sacred Sundial. Buffet lunch and accommodation at Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. (B, L, D)
Day 7 – At leisure in Machu Picchu, to explore further the ruins and relax. (B, L, D)
Day 8 – Afternoon return by train to Cusco and the Monasterio Hotel. (B)
Day 9 – Morning at leisure. Afternoon flight to Lima for overnight at the Miraflores Park. Tonight, you will be driven to a top restaurant in Lima for a gourmet dinner where you will experience some of Peru’s best cuisine, to round off your memorable visit. (B, D)
Day 10 – Transfer to the airport in Lima for the return flight to Europe. (B)
